Cumbrian vet Amanda Carson worked in rural mixed practice for 16 years then moved to Defra. She is passionate about Herdwick farming and was a founding trustee of The Sheep Trust set up during Foot & Mouth to conserve the genetic resources of sheep breeds adapted to their environments.
‘The Herdwick continues to be farmed commercially, supporting the cultural and socio economic systems that have developed over hundreds of years and help to define the unique characteristics of the Lake District. We need to find successful new markets for their products to ensure their sustainable future. I hope the Product of Designated Origin (PDO) awarded to Lakeland Herdwick meat in May 2013 will support the rural economy and the survival of the Herdwick sheep. Lakeland Herdwick is a top quality food with a great story behind it.’
