Bill Kenmir (on the left) has been working at Naddle Farm for over twenty years, for RSPB, overseeing the care of the environment and promoting biodiversity.
In 2012 RSPB took over the tenancy of Naddle farm and Bill now works iclosely with United Utilities to devise a management plan, with farmer Richard Postlethwaite (right) tending the livestock.
The aim of the partnership is to run a sustainable hill farm and support rich biodiversity. There is an extensive tree planting programme and a system of grazing that is intended to reduce pressure on upland blanket bog and peat. Many farmers are watching keenly to see if the model does in practice support successful farming, and how changes in the stocking level at Naddle affect neighbouring farms whose flocks graze on the same commons.
