• 15 From Fell to Plate, Part 2

Our last blog post was about Herdwick lamb gaining the prestigious PDO status. So it seemed fitting that Rob and I should go to an abattoir to gain a fuller picture of what it really means for a lamb to travel from fell to plate. We have been present by the side of lambs just minutes old. Now we have been by their side at the point of death.

We were both very curious and also slightly apprehensive about what we would witness. We were welcomed in to Dunbia abattoir on the edge of Preston, where we were joined by Nigel Cokell who sources meat for Booths supermarket. We spent a few hours at the abattoir, and have submitted an article and a selection of images to the managers for their perusal before we publish.

A few days after visiting the abattoir, we met Nigel again, this time at the Langdale farm of Eric Taylforth, who sells lambs to Booths. Now that we've seen both ends of the chain there's an added depth to our appreciation of what goes into livestock farming. Watch this space for a fuller blog post on our visit to the abattoir, soon.
