Do you know what a farmer's day is like? Or how far a farmer may have to walk to gather his sheep? How land use is balanced between the needs of farmers and the requirements of conservation bodies and environmental policies?
An integral part of Landkeepers has been to develop a programme for schools giving insight into the role of farmers in the bigger context of landscape care and local culture.
The education resource is now available for delivery in schools, by Rob and Harriet, and there will be downloadable resources for teachers. The programme can be used to contribute towards the John Muir Award.
The project will engage children in exploring the land in Cumbria beginning with the story of upland farming, and including discussions on biodiversity, conservation and balance.
There will be an opportunity for the children to consider the challenges arising for farmers and for conservationists, the variety of pressures on the land today.
