'You've got to have passion,

love where you live, and what you do.
That's what it's about, isn't it?'

No one knows the fells and high land of Cumbria as the farmers do. Many have tended their land for six or more generations.

Throughout 2012 and May 2013 we have been meeting farmers across Cumbria, joining them on their farms and at sales, shows and other events. We have been welcomed in and introduced to this precious but often unseen part of Cumbrian society.

The portraits have been taken on a large format camera, which is something of an event. It was a deliberate choice to ask each person to look directly into the lens, to have eye contact with the viewer. The black lines that frame the image are the rebate – the edge of the negative.

Our gallery shows the farmers at work, and you can read more on our blog. There's also a chance to see these images up close at the Land Keepers exhibition.
