Lizzy Weir comes from a farming family in Borrowdale, south of Derwent Water. Her father encouraged her to try college and have a taste for something different, which she did, but she came back to the farm every weekend and helped out when she could. She is now an apprentice combining hands-on work at Glencoyne Farm with training courses and classroom work at Newton Rigg College, where a surprising 50% of students on her course do not come from upland farming backgrounds. She’s one of a promising generation of future farmers and while she wants to travel before settling down, she has an idea about her future.
‘I came out of college and I thought, no, I really want to do it. I’d love to farm.’
