The National Trust owns a significant amount of land in the Lake District, and owns many farms that are let to tenants. Each working farm comes with grazing rights and a hefted flock.

Though the ownership of farms is just one segment of the work the National Trust does, in Cumbria it's a hugely important piece of the puzzle. As farm tenancies come up for renewal it can be a challenge to find new tenants who have knowledge of the land, and stock, and a willingness to step into the tough business of hill farming.
