Natural England is the government's adviser on the natural environment.

We met Simon to talk about what inspires him, and his role within Natural England in relation to upland farming. A big part of the work in Cumbria involves liaising with farmers, land owners, planners and local communities in the negotiation and establishment of land management agreements. Currently over 70% of land in Cumbria is under such an agreement.

Good farming can’t exist without a good environment. I know that sometimes that concept has been regarded as mutually exclusive, but I think that’s an unhelpful way of looking at it.

My point of view is that it’s a discussion around that - occasionally elusive - concept of ‘balance’ which everyone strives to achieve for our much-loved countryside.
