The Land

Getting to know this landscape involves a great deal of pleasure, but it's not just about beauty. There are some serious issues that have an impact on the way farmers farm, and we'll be exploring these over the coming year.

Broadly speaking, the pressures on this small National Park come from the challenge of meeting several needs, including:

  Cultural heritage
  Food production & security
  Water quality
  Leisure & tourism
  Local economy
  Carbon storage

In practical terms, this variety of demands on the Lake District impacts farming in many ways. Chief among these are two issues that are causing difficulty and great concern, and are discussed by almost everyone we meet:

  Reduction in sheep numbers
Off-wintering (taking sheep off fells in winter)

As the project develops, we will be keeping a keen eye on these topics. As we blog and fill up the pages of this website, you can watch the debate unfolding.
