Will runs the family farm in Ennerdale with his son Sam, where they care for sheep as well as cattle. Will is a vociferous advocate of fell farming and has gained an MBE in recognition of his work. He is keen for farmers’ opinions to be heard and valued and wishes to bring farmers, ecologists and policy makers together in the quest towards balance in the management of the Cumbrian uplands. He tells us that his common, Kinniside Common, is one of only two in the entire country where farmers are directly involved in the setting up of agri-environment agreements.
‘We needed to find 60 hectares that could be turned over to woodland. We have been advising Natural England as to which areas would be least disruptive from the commoners’ point of view and we’re actually monitoring progress ourselves.’
